Another funny story in PE….

As I was wrapping up class with some kindergarteners, we stopped to talk about what parts of our bodies we use on the rock wall (our new unit in PE). Several students mentioned hands, feet, bones, even the brain- but no one mentioned muscles. Trying to prompt them, I suggested “What’s on your bones that helps you move?” I heard a cresendo of student offer the suggestion of ”MEAT!”  I knew right away that this is was my teachable moment… to learn the difference between muscles and meat :)

Bowling

We are learning how to bowl in PE. Using team work, students learn how to keep score, set up pins, and bowl with good form. The kindergartener’s enjoy chanting “Hold the ball, take a step, bend your knee, roll the ball!”

New and Improved Fitness Testing!

I decided we need to focus a little more on fitness concepts while doing push-ups, curl-ups, and the pacer run. I’ve modified our recording sheet to include questions (for 4th& 5th grade students). I like the idea of really getting the bodies AND brains working at the same time! Check it out!

Funny Happenings in PE

Posted by: | October 8, 2010 | No Comment |

In my attempt to keep my job light hearted and in the right perspective, I’m going to keep a post going about funny happenings that occur in the gym. Take yesterday for example….

I had a first grade student walk into PE with a caterpillar on his hand. “What should I do with it, Mrs. Hoover?” he asks. My mind thought of many options… something about throwing it outside to the construction crew, a garbage can, or releasing it to a nearby tree (where the student would be left unsupervised). None of these options seemed to make sense as a horad of students ran past me. The best thing I could think of was “Try putting in your pocket…. but just so you know (to avoid pending tears)… it might not be alive at the end of PE.”

He thought this was a good idea, so in the catepillar went. At the end of class, students were transfixed, not only that it was alive, but that it was in the gym! As their teacher picked them up, we had a short discussion about why bringing animals to PE  is NOT a good idea! Apparently the caterpillar made it home safely in a plastic container graciously given by the classroom teacher.

Do you have any funny animal stories?
